Learn by Doing

Join us for a day of fun and discovery designed especially for homeschool families. Participate in hands-on activities and demonstrations at our four living history sites: the Woodland Indian Hamlet, the waterfront and Maryland Dove, Town Center, and the Godiah Spray Tobacco Plantation. Some activities depend on the weather, but participants may:

Discounted Admission!

Participants receive a discount AND enjoy special activities.

  • Adults: $9.00
  • Children ages 3-18: $3.00
  • Children under 3: Free

A $10 non-refundable fee is due for each family at the time of registration and will be deducted from your family's admission at the time of check-in on October 17, 2008.

Rain or Shine!

The event will take place rain or shine. Bring a picnic and enjoy lunch at picnic tables in our arbor, pavilion, or on the green.

  • Find out how the colonists treated illnesses  and injuries.
  • Heave! Ho! Cargo loading demo!
  • Learn to operate a colonial computer.
  • Lend a hand for open hearth cooking.
  • Apprentice at the colonial printing press.
  • Learn what two of Maryland’s first settlers  think about life in the colony. 
  • Help harvest “green gold.”
  • Ready! Aim!  Get fired up for lessons on loading and discharging a musket.
  • Enjoy other fun hands-on activities.

Check-in for Homeschool Day will take place at the Visitor Center, beginning at 10:00 A.M.  (Click here for driving directions. ) The scheduled times for demonstrations and a list of activities will be available at check-in.

In the unlikely event Homeschool Day is cancelled due to extreme weather, the fee can be applied to general admission anytime during the 2008 museum season.

How to Register!

The number of families who can participate is limited to ensure a quality experience. Register soon by completing one Registration Form per family and returning it to HSMC, Education Assistant, P.O. Box 39, St. Mary’s City, MD 20686.
