Internships
Historic St. Mary's City acknowledges a strong educational mission in its efforts to preserve and interpret Maryland's history. Our internships are designed to meet the needs and goals of the intern and the museum with mutually beneficial results. Through exposure to different aspects of the museum's operations, an intern is able to make career choices more intelligently. The intern program provides a hands-on, realistic work experience for those interested in careers in history-related museums, archaeology, museum administration, marketing, and many others.
The goals of the program are to provide the intern opportunities in the following areas:
- Academic learning and application related to the ideas, concepts, or theories of the intern's major field of study.
- Skill development specific to the intern's major field of study, related occupations, oral and written communication, interpersonal relationships, etc.
- Personal development within the areas of self-confidence, self-awareness, self-management, sensitivity and appreciation for diversity, clarification of values, career awareness and development, etc.
Eligibility
The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students and/or others re-entering the work force or changing careers. An above-average academic record is necessary as well as academic and professional recommendations. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in history, research, archaeology, education, business administration, marketing, journalism, and/or public programs. An ability to deal effectively with the public, take responsibility, show imagination and creativity, and a willingness to pursue projects with a minimum of supervision are expected. The ideal intern will be motivated and will demonstrate the ability to work independently and see a project through from start to finish.

Commitment
Internships are available year-round. A specific timetable of work will be agreed upon by the supervising staff and the intern. Not all focus areas are available at all times. Interns are expected to complete their commitments as they participate in specific daily functions and complete specialized projects. In turn, Historic St. Mary's City will provide personal supervision and training necessary for the intern to carry out assigned activities safely and adequately.
Compensation
Intern positions are generally uncompensated and no housing, mileage, insurance, or other benefits are provided. However, on a case by case basis, some exceptions regarding housing and stipends may apply. Historic St. Mary's City has no authorization to grant academic credit. Any actions taken in this regard must be initiated by the intern and/or his or her college or university. Documentation of successful completion of the program and a written evaluation of the intern's tenure will be provided by Historic St. Mary's City.
