Come discover the 17th century . . .

. . . by walking our paths into the past. See how St. Mary's City progressed from its initial settlement in 1634 to a growing colonial capital in the 1680s. As you visit each of our living history areas, we encourage you to interact with costumed staff. Leave behind thoughts of televisions and cars. Set your mind back to the 1600s and talk to colonists who are eager to give you advice for surviving the seasoning and help you establish yourself in your new home- Maryland. Experience history and discover what has changed and what has not changed in over 300 years. Exhibits at the outdoor museum include the square-rigged ship the Maryland Dove, Godiah Spray's fine Tobacco Plantation, Town Center and the State House of 1676, and a Woodland Indian Hamlet.

Historic St. Mary's City is open for scheduled group tours from mid-March through the last week in November. The exhibits are closed on Thanksgiving Day. Please call (240-895-4979 or 240-895-4980) for available tour dates and times. Tours proceed rain or shine. Hot and humid weather in mid-summer is a factor to be considered in planning a comfortable visit.

The Education Programs offered by the Historic St. Mary's City museum are designed to bring Maryland's 17th-century past alive to students of all ages. On-site programs will provide experiences which are difficult to duplicate in the classroom.
